We are a growing and consistently profitable organisation, committed to developing our business.

Internet for Business (IFB) is one of the first internet service providers (ISPs) in Scotland to offer a portfolio of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line2+ (ADSL2+) products when it launches its 2Plus range today (Monday 8 February 2010). The move to provide its customers with the very latest generation of broadband comes a month after the company revealed its plans to invest £7 million in the creation of a new, high specification data centre in Scotland.
ADSL2+ is the second generation broadband service that uses new technology with download speeds of up to three times faster than any other broadband currently available. IFB, one of Scotland’s first ISPs to provide commercial broadband services ten years ago, predicts that sales generated from the new range will account for 20% of the company’s projected turnover for 2010.
Graeme Gordon Operations Director of IFB, says, “Performing more efficiently in the workplace is a top priority for all Scottish organisations as they attempt to move forward in the current financial climate and continue to compete on a national and international stage. Exploring new technologies such as ADSL2+ will play a part in achieving this objective. It delivers cost savings, far faster ways of working online and, due to the higher capacities involved, access to a wider array of technologies across a single connection, such as Voice and Video conferencing.
“ADSL2+ still uses ordinary copper phone lines between office locations and the nearest exchange to get you online, but in addition it relies on new technologies across your service provider’s network backbone to greatly increase performance. It can significantly improve connection speeds and reliability of the current generation of broadband service available. This means that end users experience much faster download speeds and, as importantly, quicker upload speeds - in some cases speeds of up to 20Mbps are expected. These improvements allow businesses of all sizes to send and receive the same amount of data in less time or more data in the same time, providing a real opportunity for them to focus on core business activities.
“For companies which download very large documents, files or images it’s clear to see the value of having the new service. And, in a world where the term, ‘I need this yesterday’ is all too familiar, this increased speed will put businesses one step ahead of the competition and continue to keep Scottish business competitive.”
ADSL2+ has been rolled out across the UK, in line with British Telecom’s national upgrade to achieve what they refer to as a ‘21st century network’. As well as internet access, the enhanced speed allows businesses to use broadband connection for business voice calls and the next generation video conferencing technologies called “tele-presence”; both offering a new level of interaction between users.
Graeme continues, “ADSL2+ arrives at a time when the Internet is becoming more and more critical to doing business and where an increasing number of companies of all sizes are looking to use Internet based service providers as part of their core operation. Getting ADSL2+ speeds available across the whole country will take time and investment and it’s encouraging that some of this investment has already come from Scottish Government. Until we achieve this broader service, we may see two-tier broadband availability, with those on traditional broadband speeds in rural areas and towns, and those using super fast speeds in large cities.”
IFB continues to be an ISP market leader, having announced in December 2009 its significant investment in the creation of a new, high specification data centre which will be unique in Scotland. The 14000 sq ft centre is being developed in partnership with Dell who will support on the technology, best practice and infrastructure design. Set to open during the second quarter of 2010, this investment will see IFB’s capacity grow ten-fold and the creation of ten new jobs.
