IFB CREATES SCOTLAND’S HIGHEST SPECIFICATION DATA CENTRE
A £7 million investment by IFB in the creation of a new, high specification data centre in Scotland is announced today (Tuesday 1 December 2009) at Gartner – the world’s leading annual data centre conference in Las Vegas. The IFB centre will be unique in Scotland and will be one of only four sites in the UK to carry Uptime Institute Tier III certification. The centre is being developed in partnership with Dell, which will provide the technology best practice and infrastructure design for the centre which will be based in Aberdeen. The 14000 sq ft IFB centre will open during the second quarter of 2010 and will see IFB’s capacity grow ten-fold on the company’s current capacity. The development will create ten new jobs in the new centre. IFB will relocate its headquarters to the new building which will also house new business continuity suites specifically for IFB clients.
Operations Director of IFB Graeme Gordon made the announcement with at the Gartner Conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday 1 December 2009.
Graeme says of the new development, “The IFB centre will set a new standard for data centre design and customer facilities. We have the full support of Dell’s global infrastructure division for developing the technical design and future services; this will give the centre the most advanced capabilities in Scotland and make IFB a serious consideration for any UK company. We’re investing £7 million in this project which is in response to our UK wide client base’s increasing demands for the highest quality of data centre services from technology hosting and data back-up to business continuity and emergency and disaster recovery. The entire design revolves around reliability, sustainability and efficiency, giving the IFB data centre, in a power hungry industry the ‘greenest’ foot print possible.”
Tim Webb Dell’s Head of Global Data Centre Optimisation Services says, “IFB’s new state of the art centre is a great a example of how Dell’s inside out approach to data centre design and modeling helps customers efficiently scale IT capacity while ensuring availability, reliability and environmental friendliness. We are honoured to be a part of IFB’s success.”
Low power consumption, self generation of power from low carbon foot print sources, the use of low impact services including the removal of traditional UPS battery systems and the reuse of waste by products – in particular heat – will be designed into the new centre in Aberdeen’s Hareness Road. The centre will be a model for future centres with its rigorous and comprehensive Tier III site infrastructure.
Vice President of Development and Operations at Uptime Institute, Julian Kudritzki says, “Uptime Institute Tier Certification is the most rigorous and comprehensive site infrastructure assessment in the global marketplace. IFB’s investment in Tier III Certification of the Aberdeen site further confirms their commitment to providing the high availability to their customers. Tier III Certification will significantly differentiate IFB in the UK and Europe from ‘self-certifications’. In Uptime Institute experience, the majority of self-certifications are inaccurate, sometimes off by two Tiers. As a third-party validation, Tier III Certification will provide IFB clients with the assurance that the site infrastructure is in place to respond to their business requirements.”
Graeme Gordon is convinced that Scotland can be a leader in data centre development due to the country’s temperate climate, renewable energy resources, accessibility and skilled workforce.
Maggie McGinlay, Regional Director for Scottish Enterprise says “Scotland has a leading edge in many digital technologies and IFB’s investment in what will be a unique center to Scotland shows the company’s great leadership and innovation. The IFB data centre will attract clients from across the world to Scotland and form part of a bigger Naturally Cool initiative undertaken by ScotlandIS and others. This is a prime example of a Scottish company thinking globally.”
Based in the centre of Aberdeen’s Europe’s energy capital, IFB’s current data centre has achieved a 100% uptime for all critical services since its switch on in 2001. The company owns its own infrastructure providing a guaranteed stable operating environment for clients which is backed up by round the clock monitoring and security. The new data centre will carry Uptime Institute Tier 3 certification. The Tier classification system is the data centre industry benchmarking standard which effectively evaluates centre infrastructure in terms of business requirements for uptime.
